I'm not a native english speaker, but I must admit that period was my first idea too, because I was thinking of something like:
* list item 1
* list item 2
but reading the question again, the verb "introduce" makes it totally clear that it's a colon. I'd say the dumb thing was not thinking period, it was not thinking.

If/when I have children, they are either getting homeschooled or going to a private school, I don't care what I have to give up to do it - they are not going to a public school here. I will not leave it up to government to brainwash my child or completely waste their intellect.

@Charlesperalo its the education system in general not the government! Sure the government are bad but what have they done that would negatively affect the schools? Not pay them enough? Watch this doc. again and you'll understand that it is not the lack of money because when the govt paid the public schools BILLIONS nothing happened. All the money was spent on rubbish like sports and exercise machines... not that Americans don't need them....

@jhzab666 If it makes you feel better I'm 16 work for the Johnson presidential campaign, am involved in an internet startup, own a non-profit that will be launched in august, own a patent, can program computers, studies economics and I recently was on the John Stossel show for a minute. Now I'm getting ready to go into my senior year and not go to college, but move out to California and look to work more on business.

South Carolina schools are deplorable. I lived there and I home schooled my son. When I was able I got out of that state to better schools in rural Virginia.

Where is the responsibility of the students' parents? They act like hapless victims of the institutions. Their children cannot read because the parents likely dont teach them to read. You cannot leave the rearing and education of your child in the hands of strangers. Parents have to actively engage their children on an intelectual level. Teachers see kids 5 or less hours a day, what are these remedial children learning the other 19 hours of the day?

The American school is fun but it really does not encourage critical thinking and basic knowledge.
Therefore, if the American students are stupid it has very much to do with the school system which is a total failure when it comes to transferring sustainable knowledge and wisdom.
